/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

My gearfag brain tells me that a professional/prosumer nikon F autofocus SLR is the ideal film camera, but my normal person brain tells me that it's time to say "enough", stop switching gear around, and just treat the film camera like a hobby/fashion toy instead of a serious device that can be taken traveling until I can free up a room for developing LF, then it's ideal to leave the 35mm at home and shoot digital for fun and sheets for passion.

The normal person brain is probably right.
>>
>>4309574
The viewfinder doesn't suck, for one.
>>
>>4309578
So you’re going to abandon it for digital at one end and LF at the other? Good luck bro. Someday when I have an extra $1500 around I’ll try my hand at LF
>>
>>4309581
The burkepill.

Digital cameras also make handy light meters for large format
>>
>>4309578
Sort of pretty based, but you'll be missing out on printing all your inferior format film shots in the darkroom.

I just found out these can be really useful for more than just macro, which I found out that are great for getting a 1:1 ratio on your subject.

What I didn't know is something like a 105mm/2.8 also makes an outstanding portrait lens along with even an all-around good prime lens. Also typically it'll be cheaper than a similar fast lens.

Is this really the best type of lens for all pictures until you need some kind of zoom?

>>
>>4309479
The tradeoff is that they are bigger heavier and more expensive and not as fast as a non-macro. You can usually find 70-200 zooms that are just as fast as ~100mm macros. They're good lenses but some find them a bit clinical for portraits in particular. I like using mine as a general purpose lens though, and 2.8 is fast enough for me most of the time. That said 1:1 is incredibly close and niche, if you don't do macro I'd just get a fast prime.
>>
>>4309489
I currently use a 24-120/4 lens for macro and I only get maybe 40% of my subject so yeah I would use it as a macro lens. I love going for hikes and taking pictures of little bugs and critters, mushrooms etc. very interesting things and much easier and cheaper to shoot than birds. Someday I’ll have to save up for something zoomy and lightweight like the 400/4.5 from Nikon.
>>
>>4309489
Often. The 100/2.8 screwdrive tokina is relatively small, light and cheap and has the great AF/MF focus clutch.
>>
>>4309483
Autofocus is way slower and hunting can be brutal. Notice the limiter switch has no third position for 0.5m+.

It was nice of them to include the control ring that belonged on the 20/24/35/50/85 set I guess? It's kind of stupid that only some lenses have that - meanwhile the focus rings on the lenses without it are overly large. It should be standard. I set it to ISO in stills instead of using nikon's ever-clunky auto ISO/min SS setting system, and then I grab a lens that doesn't use it and i go to turn an ISO ring that isn't there. Once you get used to the ring half the Z lineup seems crippled.

Also it's nice for aperture pulls doing boomer home movies without giving up instant MF. Nikon Z will not really be a complete system until they revise the ergonomics of control-ringless lenses (and 40/28 weather sealing), release premium 2.8 primes again, and release a 70-200 f4 like lense (but different, if they could pack 70-300 f4 into an internally zooming VR lens with 1:2 macro it would be boss)
>>
>>4309479
most macro lenses actually lose stops of light as they focus closer, starting at pedestrian distances such as 1:5 reproduction ratios, because of the unique design principles. at mfd this is a t4.5 lense.

the Z cameras auto-correct the AE for it, but you are getting less light if you focus closer than the average long prime could

and even though i as a 40 year old millennifart boomer often shit on gen-z i think it is kinda cool. Just imagine them going to whatever social gathering they are assembling in, bringing out all these cool semi-vintage digicams that nobody gave 2 shits about until recently..
The market is absolutely booming right now.. they want it all. The shittiest model you can imagine? Guess what.. they want it and they want to pay more than yesterday.
In certain niche markets these things sell for even above ebay prices which is insane.
Gen-z is unironically making photography fun again?
It is also quite interesting to think about the conditions that made this possible in the first place. So what happened exactly? My viewpoint is the following:
Younger Gen-z social media users have only used cellphones for photography.. they have finally realized that the platform has limitations.. they look at pictures their parents took of them when they were kids using digicams and want that particular look etc, meanwhile the large camera companies have completely neglected this market segment thanks to plebs only using their phones. just look at Canon for instance.. they haven't released a single Ixus model in 7 years and their last hoorah was nothing special in terms of specifications so we have to go back even further to find their high end models. Other companies have done the same.. there is nothing to be seen from the likes of Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Samsung or any of the companies that for years made these ultra-compact and cool looking cameras.
It find it all really strange. You have a generation that simply loves this type of stuff and nothing to sell them. Just imagine these cameras with updated hardware, maybe some fresh colors and "limited edition" varieties.
Also feel free to post pics of cool digicams.

I've been shooting on a Canon 5DIV for the past few years. My shutter has been sticking and instead of sending it back, figure it's time to upgrade. Before this I was a Nikon shooter with the D700/D750/D800 and really liked it but switched to Canon mainly due to the f1.2 lenses and much better customer service in my country.

I rented an R5 and R6II and they were nice enough with the pro zooms and the 50 1.2 but after trying the Z8 and the small 1.8 primes, I really was reminded of what I missed about Nikon. AF was better, the camera bodies felt better and more "rugged", DR was better but in fairness comparing to a previous gen Canon R5. One thing I hated though was how hyuge the Nikon 50 1.2 was- and that's my go-to lens in any system.

Is Nikon doing better now as a company in listening to their customers than they did during the DSLR days? I think I read they were overtaken by Snoy so it must be a kick to the nuts to be #3 now.

worked photo retail for about a decade, and from that perspective, sony had by far the best store support for my region (most sponsored events & workshops, rep visits, relatively few supply issues), greatest spif / commission paid of any of the brands, greatest employee purchase programs / discounts
a lot of employees switched over around the a7II/III generations and never looked back, and the incentives to push sony are just too good

whores are cheap. Can be had for $100 for an obvious drug addict, or $250 for a not-obvious-in-pics drug addict. Or can get a whore (they call themselves escorts) who are drug free for ~$700

These are all for an hour or so of time. Prices in Europe and Asia are substantially lower than this with a much higher quality of people as well.

>Rubber feet need a rigid base to keep the center of the bottom from touching the floor,
Can't this be solved by the bag just using tougher, but still flexible, material, or using longer rubber strips instead of individual feet? My 15 year old Canon bag has that, big chunky rubber 'runners' on the bottom, and it's really darn nice for setting down the bag on a wet or shitty area (think the floor of a car in winter time) without the bottom getting soaked through even without proper waterproofing.

Canon also seem to use those type 1 Sony sensors.
>>
>>4307994
The sensor is a monochrome photon counter, nothing more, and sony builds them to client specs under sony's rules. It's often not the same sensors they use in their own cameras, which is why you dont see nikon using the a7riv or a7iv sensor ever and they've been using revisions of the d750 and d850 sensors instead.

CFA specs and signal processing, which actually matter for more than signal to noise ratio and readout speed, vary by brand, and its been theorized that sony draws up contracts affecting these that cripple their competition if they buy a sony sensor, ie:
>fuji can only have sony's next gen 40mp APS-C sensors if fuji does not make an APS-C camera with a bayer array, as the resolution increase from switching back to the superior CFA would BTFO the entire a6 line and sony would lose their entire APS-C customer base (and probably some FF users) to fuji.
>nikon receives semi-crippled sensors for fps/video simply because they are significantly better at making cameras and lenses than sony, resulting in nikon to struggle to support competitive sports/video features - hence nikon's recent purchase of RED - and therefore RED's contracts with non-sony sensor suppliers. sony probably straight up told them that they would never provide nikon with global shutter technology and that was it.
>LEGALLY POSSIBLE WITH LOTS OF NDAS: Sony can theoretically say "we will give you this sensor, but this list of features must not be supported until X amount of time has passed" in a contract, making them an unseen hand in controlling the entire camera market and maintaining their #2 position
>>
Selling out to snoy was a mistake
>>
>>4307996
None.
Panasonic sold off their fabs several years ago and Kodak did well before that.
Supposedly, Nikon sourced one or more sensors from TowerJazz for the D700/800 line.
Sigma had Foveon manufactured by Dongbu, but, reportedly, that ended as a result of them fucking up the full frame design.
Phase One might still get theirs from Dalsa. Though, I'm not sure who the supplier is after they transitioned to CMOS.
I also haven't heard who Leica gets their 30x45mm stuff from.

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

>a relative shoestring budget

Also it wasn't Fraser personally who rigged the cameras, it was his AC's and grip team
>>
>>4309409
For a hollywood film of that scale, $80m is absolutely tiny.
Also, saying Fraser didn't personally rig the cameras is like saying Spielberg didn't personally set up the machine guns in the beach scene of Saving Private Ryan.

Got me a GoPro, gonna get my happy ass outside and make a short film. Fuck me.

You are lucky. I have so many lenses and cameras but I can’t make shit now because my wife is sick. Hopefully when she is better I can go out and start making stuff. Having too many lenses makes it hard to make stuff because of being too worried about choosing the right lens. Just go out and make stuff and it will probably look better then what most of the gear-autists on here make.

Flickr is for photography, instagram is for advertising your personal "influencer" brand and getting exposure by convincing AI controlled profiles to latch on to you, 500px is for feeding chinese AI

Seems we don't got one right now, so I will start.

Pic related - it's from my LX100. I've heard that she is kinda prone to sensor dust, but is this actually sensor dust? Or an error on the Sensor?

There used to be two dots but I was able to eliminate one with the "vacuum cleaner trick" - cut out the bottom of a 0,5l bottle and put it over the extended lense. Then suck away.

Worked already two times for me, but not with this fucker.

>What about the people larping as NASA's space imaging experts?
If exacting sports photographers that somehow need 40fps are 5% of the market that's another 0.0005% right there

The other 94.9995% of the market doesn't actually need more technical capability than is on the a7iii/a7riii, even if they think they do, and their photographic output would not change one bit if their R5s and Z8s were replaced as such.

Traveling asia for months with an x-t2, 18mmf2, 35mmf1.4, 70-300mm(for wildlife), and an iphone 15 pro max (13, 28, 50, 135). I kind of want another camera for attaching to my backpack chest strap, or putting on a selfie stick for video. Is a 360 camera best for this? Or action cam?
>>
>>4309420
So, assuming you're paid nada, bringing a camera you plan on using constantly I'd say the cost doesn't justify a second just-in-case cam, unless you plan on doing a pov timelapse with an action cam or would make use of a 360 on your back in some interesting event/location.
Instead make sure you backup the photos you do take daily either on your personal NAS or in the cloud. Gear breaks/gets stolen, if you're chugging this much of it along I imagine the pics matter to you so make sure you lose as few as possible.
>>
>>4309422
It's always good to get the perspective of not spending unnecessary money, but I'm sure I could get either option second hand for a couple hundred so price isn't actually much of a concern. Cloud backups is a good call though, I will likely figure out a provider to sign up for before departing. I could probably just get by with the iphone, but I could see a 360 cam being fun for temple walk-throughs and such, and my interests are mostly just about fun

Are macro flash diffusers really worth $100+? That's almost as much as the flash itself.
