I was in 6th grade when R/S released. I was 9-11 years old during the peak of pokemania. the games, the cards, the anime, were all massive 98-2001, but by the end of 2002 all the kids that were the prime age for pokemon when it came out were in middle school. yugioh was picking up traction, and kids were at the age where parents trusted them unsupervised outside with a skateboard or a bike. being really into videogames was still considered very "nerdy" even though the kids with the most games also tended to be from the wealthier families that also supported extracurriculars, being on sports teams, and generally buying more shit for their kids to use outdoors.all of this to say that R/S were barely a blip on the radar for the kids that were blessed to be the perfect age at the perfect time for pokemania. my friends and I all had R/S, but we were also clearly the "nerd" friend group, and i remember being disappointed they didn't have more of the gen 1/2 pokes, but overall i thought they were awesome and i loved the kind of oceanic theme nintendo had going on at the time with R/S/E, wind waker, mario sunshine, animal crossing, etc. etc.
